Throughout his professional career, Prof Dr med. Dr. h. c. Horst-Dieter Becker has been active in different positions. At the University of Tuebingen, Germany, he was successively Chairman Department of Surgery from 1987 – 2006, Dean of the Medical Faculty from 1995 – 1998, Member of the Administrative Board from 1995 – 1998, Professor of Surgery since 1980, Representative of the Faculty for Planning and Construction, Head of Department of Medical Technology from 2004 – 2006, and Head of the Steinbeis Centre for Innovative Medical Technology. He was also the Chief Executive Officer of the German Air Rescue from 2000 to 2005. Prof. Becker is a member of more than 20 international and national medical societies, such as American College of Surgeons, German Society for Visceral Surgery, where he has been President from 2000 to 2001, and International Surgical Society, where he has been President from 2000 to 2002.
Prof. Becker has been working on health projects in Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen and Iraq over the last 20 years. These projects included hospital planning, hospital organization, planning and installation of medical technology, and training for clinical personnel. Furthermore, he developed the scientific concept for a medical college “Batterjee Medical College” in Saudi Arabia, based on German standards, which is running since 2005, where he is since 2007 Vice Dean of the College. He has also designed a concept for posttraumatic rehabilitation in the UAE. He is very much interested in the transfer of German / European knowhow into institutions in the MENA and other regions.
